In the second half of 1995 the new generation of Series 5 was presented, distinguished by the designation E39 and destined to collect the E34 witness . Massive is the use of electronics: next to the multipoint electronic injection system with integrated ignition and air flow meter, there are devices for active safety, such as ABS and traction control (ASC + T), that prevents the car from breaking down in situations of poor grip, possibly disengageable to leave total control of the car to the driver. Internally, the E39 was more spacious than the previous model: even the rear area of ​​the cockpit was more comfortable for the occupants, thanks to a few more centimeters recovered during the design phase. The comfort is also perceived before, thanks to the way power seats, steering wheel and mirrors. The driving seat was also characterized by the multifunction nature of the steering wheel which incorporates the controls of the radio and air conditioning system. At the time of the debut the range included the sedan versions with 6 and 8 cylinder engines, petrol or turbodiesel , coming (though revised in electronics and equipped, in some cases of Vanos system ) from the latest evolution of the previous E34 .

Touring

Available initially only in the three-volume sedan configuration , from mid-1996 it is also proposed in Touring version , that is station wagon replacing the homonymous one based on the previous E34 . This version has some new design features, such as the rear end equipped with shock absorbersmore inclined, solution designed to give more space to the luggage compartment. In addition, the loading floor is sliding and can be removed to facilitate the loading of heavy objects. Aesthetically, the Touring is identical to the sedan up to the height of the second upright (except for the roof bars on the roof). The tail features optical groups similar to the previous version on an E34 basis, but modernized.

At the beginning of 1998 , the range was expanded with two new diesels that joined the 525tds: the 520d , equipped with the small four-cylinder derived from the 320d (16v 1951 cm³ by 136 bhp), and the 530d (6 cylinders in line 24v from 184 hp).

In June 2001 the Series 5 underwent a small restyling of the range. New ones were introduced that involved the front, with the classic pair of round headlights surrounded by a ring of optical fiber that served as position light, new bumper shields, led headlamps , grille with a larger chrome frame, and modifications of detail to the interiors.

With the Gewährleistung instead, the seller – by law and even if nothing is written in the contract – guarantees that at the time of purchase the vehicle has no defects. Therefore, if the vehicle you have purchased used, after some months, has serious defects to the engine or the electrical system, even if the contract does not say anything, it can (must) be repaired at the expense of the dealer.

How long does the Gewährleistung last?

In addition, the Gewährleistung lasts 12 or 24 months, so only if there is a defect in this period of time you can contact your dealer. Also consider that if the defect occurs during the first 6 months, the seller will have to show that this defect was not present at the time of sale of the car (which is very difficult). Not all faults trigger the obligation of repairs to be borne by the dealer: defects resulting from the wear and tear of the vehicle, mind you, are not included in the Gewährleistung. Moreover, that the Gewährleistung is only for the consumer and only in some cases, so we need to have the matter examined by a lawyer to understand what possibilities there are.
